The Roles of Knowing Psycholinguistics for English Teacher

Psycholinguistics is a study of psychological process about language competence and its implementation. It can be concluded that psycholinguistic is a science, which studies language in relation with psychological process, occurred when people speak including comprehending aspect and produce language sign.
In the language teaching and learning process, students have their steps to acquire all the materials in line with the development of mind. In daily life, people often want to say something but do not know how to say that thing in mind. It is because of the limited vocabularies that they have.
Psycholinguistic principle explains that receiving and producing utterance are the early steps of language learning. In second language learning, students should love listening, imitating, and speaking activity. Because of that teacher should apply behaviouristic theory that majoring the three of them. Students will learn how to speak by listening and imitating their teacher. Therefore, mastering foreign language to achieve acquisition level, learners need to do oral activity like listening and imitating/pronouncing then do communicative activity actively. Reading and writing activity and grammar mastery can be done later.
Above is a way to start teaching a second language by recognizing the psycological process. Studying psycholinguistics makes the teacher know how to teach their students. They will know how the development of mind of their students by this psycolinguistics. After that, they will know how to teach their student with a suitable way in line with the students’ mind development. Then, the process of teaching and learning the second language will produce a great result.
